At the end of Chichester Harbour – the main branch are the villages of Dell Quay and Fishbourne – literally where the “fish are born”!
With long histories of sailing and commercial importance – especially for the Romans and Saxons due to their proximity to the City of Chichester and the South Downs these villages are quirky and beautiful.
There are still working boatyards at Dell Quay and there is good water access for a few hours either side of high water. The pub – The Anchor – has excellent views of sunsets looking towards the West.
Between the two villages are the Fishbourne marshes – an important wildlife area for the Harbour – for special orchids, wetlands and grazing for winter wildfowl and hunting birds including – Merlin, Sparrowhawk and buzzards and owls.
During the Summer holidays the Parish Rooms of St Peter and St Mary do Sunday Cream Teas – Between 3-5pm which are very good value. Finish with a walk to the harbour or walk round the church…
Dell Quay is a hamlet really, right on the harbour. It boasts an excellent pub – The Crown and Anchor – but parking can be cramped, especially in the Summer – you will need to park thoughtfully along the lane and walk.
Dell Quay Sailing Club is friendly and hold races when they have water! Their Regatta teas in August are renowned amongst the sailors!
The Harbour Conservancy also have their main classroom at Dell Quay – for schools and other activities. (www.chichesterconservancy.co.uk) For more ideas about what they offer see their website.
I hope this has given you a glimpse of these two special areas of the harbour, ready for you to visit…?
